Employment status: Temporary part-time – 15 hours per week, plus ADO
About the role
Brisbane State High School is seeking expressions of interest for a Boat Maintenance Officer (Boatman) to support our Rowing Program. This is to commence in Term 4 and will be for a period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension.
This role focuses on providing maintenance support to the Director of Rowing (MIC) for both boys and girls. The position will be ensuring high quality services are achieved for students in the Rowing Program.
The Boatman reports to the HR Business Manager for HR and administration
purposes. The position will work collaboratively and professionally with the MIC assigned to oversee the school's rowing program.
N.B. This position operates outside of standard business hours. Start times during the Rowing Season will be early in the morning and Regattas are generally held on Saturdays. Time in lieu will be negotiated in line with operational requirements.
As the Boatman you will be responsible for:
Regularly carrying out maintenance and compliance checks to ensure the rowing facilities and equipment are in optimal condition.
Work under the guidance and instruction of the Directors of GPS & Boys' Activities, Director of QGSSSA & Girls' Activities and Master in Charge of Rowing.
Communicate with the Rowing MIC about issues and concerns.
Act on Workplace Health and Safety issues immediately.
Facilitate the safe transportation of boats and all necessary equipment to and from regattas.
Carry out first line maintenance and repairs of boats and equipment including electronic equipment, boat trailers, motorboats, outboard motors, rowing craft and oars.
Prepare rowing craft, motorboats, ergometers and other equipment ahead of time for daily required usage, including provision of applicable safety equipment, fuel and registration.
Ensure fuel and other operational resources are on hand.
Manage annual stocktake and inventory of rowing assets.
Maintain a clean and tidy boat shed and surrounding area (different to general cleaning of amenities etc).
Maintain ergometers.
In consultation with the Rowing MIC, develop work systems and schedules that optimise the efficiency of the boat shed, and minimise delays for internal stakeholders.
Ensure a supply of spare parts, materials and tools is maintained at the rowing shed.
- Be present at the shed during training times and attend regattas, training camps and other events as required, in consultation with the Rowing MIC.

- Other suitable duties, consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position as directed by the supervisor or nominated delegate.
Suitability Assessment Criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of rowing programs at secondary school level in a community environment.
- Experience in the administration and maintenance of all matters pertaining to rowing shed operations.
- Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and proactive.
- Senior First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) or a commitment to obtain such a qualification within a time frame agreed by the school.
- Hold a current Working with Children Blue Card.
- Power boat licence or a commitment to obtain such a qualification within a time frame agreed by the school.
- Be available to attend the rowing shed and regattas outside of school hours and weekends to maintain the operational readiness of equipment as required.
- Excellent organisational, communication and time management skills.
- Ability to think logically and solve problems.

Rowing Program. This is to commence in Term 4 and will be for a period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension.
As a key member of the school support staff team, the position will support the delivery of an effective Rowing Program at Brisbane State High School. This role focuses on providing support to the Director of Rowing for both boys and girls activities. The position will ensure high-quality coaching is provided to students in the Rowing Program.
The Head Coach reports to the HR Business Manager for HR and administration purposes. This role focuses on providing support to the Director of Rowing for both boys and girls activities.
