Brisbane State High School is seeking applications for Teacher Aides to work within our Learning & Enrichment faculty supporting students with disabilities (SWD) in the classroom. We have casual and part-time opportunities available.
Role Purpose
SWD Teacher Aides support the work of Teachers by providing assistance with the supervision and learning of all students in an assigned class or activity, with particular emphasis on those students with high and/or additional needs including students with disabilities (both physical and intellectual), behavioural issues and English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD).
Duties would include:
- Reviewing and explaining the concepts and materials that students will be working with.
- Reinforcing concepts taught by the classroom teacher.
- Providing students with additional opportunities to learn and master the material including discussions, demonstrations, quizzes, group work and directed activities.
- Assisting in the planning and production of appropriate instructional materials for students with high and/or additional needs (that are in line with the teacher's individual subject goals for the student(s)).
- Monitoring student progress and providing feedback the teacher with feedback.
- In collaboration with the teacher, provide supportive assistance in classroom environments in both academic and practical subjects. Supportive assistance includes:
- Assisting the teacher with logistical requirements of the lesson or activity e.g. distribution and collection of resources and materials to students.
- Assisting monitor and enforce behavioural rules and expectations.
- Assisting students learn how to use equipment and materials safely in order to prevent injury and damage.
- Assisting students resolve problems encountered with tasks.
- Obtaining resources and undertaking research etc. on behalf of the teacher for the class
- Assisting students undertaking assessment tasks and examinations as a 'reader', 'scribe' or supervisor.
- Assist with the supervision of individual students and small groups during activities both on and off campus.
- Prepare teaching aides and other material to support teaching and learning programs including supporting the implementation of individual student education and behaviour programs.
- Support learning programs in literacy, numeracy and ICT.
- Assist students with physical and mobility challenges.
- Assist students with intellectual disabilities with the use of learning aides.
- Undertake specific therapy tasks with individual students under the guidance of the relevant teacher or other specialist.
- Assist with supporting and reinforcing positive behaviour.
- Assist with student personal hygiene, toileting and feeding requirements as necessary.
- Support and assist high and/or additional needs students accessing alternative education, work experience and co-curricular programs and the like.
- Undertake administrative tasks associated with the Teacher Aide role as required by the Head of Learning and Enrichment.
If you have a desire to work with children with additional needs, willing to undertake specific training to enhance student support, motivated, have strong communication and relationship building skills, can work effectively with a diverse range of people, and have experience working with students with disabilities (advantageous but not mandatory), we would like to hear from you.
