On Saturday 3 March, State High teams participated in the Queensland round of the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) competition. State High students have been competing in OzCLO since 2011, a tradition started by Mrs Bronwyn Dewar, former Head of Languages. Students are involved in solving complex problems using symbols, numbers and languages of which they have no knowledge, focusing their skills in problem-solving to recognise patterns and to break the codes.
This year, State High entered 19 of the 79 teams in the Round 1 competition which was the most teams entered from any school in Queensland.
This is the first step in the internationally recognised Olympiad known as the International Olympiad in Linguistics (IOL). The top teams in each state are invited to compete in the national finals, with the winning Australian team going on to participate internationally.
State High has a proud tradition of gaining a place for at least one team in the national finals since we first entered the competition and became the Australian winning team in 2017 and 2018.
Our students have excelled this year and we had five of the six Queensland teams in the national finals on Wednesday 24 March. This is a first for any Queensland school. Our Senior 1 and Junior 1 teams tied for 13th place out of 441 teams competing in Round 1 across Australia.
BSHS Junior Team 3 placed as the third winning junior team of the OzCLO 2021 National Round.
Congratulations to all teams for their outstanding results, dedication and enthusiasm in representing State High in this high challenge Olympiad.
