Junior Course Guide
The 2024 Junior Course Guide (PDF, 2.2 MB) provides an overview of subjects offered for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Years 7 and 8 Subject Selection
In Years 7 and 8, students select 12 units of study for the year (6 per semester).
These subjects must be studied for 2 semesters in both Years 7 and 8:
- English
- Humanities
- Mathematics
- Science
- Academia, Resilience and Careers (ARC).
Students study subjects from these areas for 1 semester in both Years 7 and 8, with the option to continue study for another semester in:
- Health and Physical Education
- Languages (Chinese, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish)
- Technologies (Built Environment and Engineering, Design Technology, Digital Technology)
- The Arts (Dance, Music, Drama, Media Arts, Visual Arts)
Year 9 Subject Selection
In Year 9, students must select 12 units of study for the year (6 per semester).
Compulsory subjects for two semesters:
- English or English Extension
- Humanities
- Mathematics or Mathematics Extension
- Science
- Academia, Resilience and Careers (ARC).
Students wishing to study English Extension and/or Mathematics Extension in Year 9 must have achieved a B standard in that subject in Year 8.
- Students will continue to study the language that was studied in Year 8.
- Students who are intending to study the language in Year 10 must choose a second semester of this language in Year 9.
- This additional semester of the language will count as one of the three electives.
Students then must select three elective subjects from the following:
- Technologies — Design, Engineering, Digital Solutions, Entrepreneurial Business
- The Arts — Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Music or Music Extension
- Health and Physical Education — HPE
- Science — Psychology
- Humanities — Philosophy
- Languages — Unit 2 of Language (must be studied if continuing into Year 10)
- Learning and Enrichment — Language for Academic Success (LAS), Literacy and Numeracy Program (LSU); for identified/eligible students only
The electives students select can come from any of the Learning Areas. Students can select multiple electives from the same Learning Area.

Year 8 2024 into Year 9 2025 Curriculum Showcase
The Curriculum Showcase was held on Wednesday 31 July 2024 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm on the Merivale Street Campus.
Learning
Students may apply to study Aspire subjects in Years 7 and 8. Within Aspire subjects, students will be given opportunities for enriched learning with an emphasis on problem-solving and higher-order thinking skills.
Aspire subjects are offered to motivated and talented students who are studying:
- English or humanities
- mathematics or science
- engineering.
Students can only apply to study Aspire in one or more of the above programs.
Places in Aspire classes are offered on the basis of academic merit-order and are available to students regardless of their enrolment category.
