Honouring a former Executive Principal, the ‘David Sutton Award for All-Round Excellence’ celebrates academic excellence, service to the school community and extra-curricular involvement. The 2020 winner, Angela Chen, captained both Technical Crew and QGSSSA Badminton and contributed greatly to Vocal Ensembles, school productions, QGSSSA Touch Football, Debating and Instrumental Music.

Angela coached younger students in Debating, assisted her peers with English and was a 2020 Prefect. Angela is an outstanding student in all subjects. Angela said, “My proudest achievement was co-founding an independent youth magazine in 2020.” Since graduating, Angela has moved interstate to study a Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales.

State High’s most prestigious award—the ‘Dux of the School’—was awarded to Stamati Iconomidis. In his senior year, Stamati achieved 100 per cent marks across Philosophy and Reason, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Additionally, Stamati achieved Excellence Pockets in 2018 and 2020, and a distinction or higher in every ICAS paper he completed.

Stamati’s six-year commitment to Instrumental Music and GPS Tennis was exemplary, as was his leadership as GPS Tennis Captain. Stamati’s outstanding high school achievements were further recognised in being awarded the UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship. This year, he will commence a Bachelor of Engineering/Master of Engineering dual degree at The University of Queensland. Stamati said, “I hope that in the future I can continue to have great achievements in order to make a real difference in the world.”

Congratulations to these exceptional young people who rose to every challenge and, in a school of many high achieving, committed and talented students, achieved these special awards.
