Academic Selective Entry

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Brisbane State High School has a strong tradition of academic excellence. Entry to the school through the Academic Selective Entry category is limited and heavily oversubscribed each year.

Students are selected on the basis of an order of merit.

Applying for Academic Selective Entry

Students applying for Year 7 under this category of enrolment are required to sit the Academic Selective Entry test. This test is used to spread and rank high-performing young students. Test results are the primary selection criterion for entry. In addition to the test results, students are required to demonstrate continued excellence in academic, behaviour and effort to remain eligible for Academic Selective Entry enrolment.

A non-refundable and non-transferable Processing Fee of $420.00 applies for all Academic Selective Entry Applications.

Students undertaking the test are required to provide a completed Photo Identification Form (PDF, 153KB), upon registration at the test venue. 

Tests can only be undertaken on the dates listed below:

  • Year 6, 2021 for Year 7, 2022 Academic Selective Entry – 28 March 2021
  • Year 5, 2021 for Year 7, 2023 Academic Selective Entry – 17 October 2021
 

Year 7, 2022 Selective Entry Enrolment Information Session

Year 7, 2023 Selective Entry Enrolment Information Session

On Tuesday 20 July 2021, an Enrolment Information Session was held for parents and guardians of students enrolling in Year 7, 2023 via the Academic Selective Entry program. HAST Information for Year 7, 2022

The Higher Ability Selection Test - Secondary (HAST) Sample Question Booklet provides an opportunity for Year 6 students wishing to apply for the Academic Selective Entry test, to reflect on the types of skills required of the candidate but is not designed to teach candidates these skills. ACER has written this booklet to assist students become familiar with the style and content of the questions at the HAST Junior Secondary level.

Entry to the school through the Academic Selective Entry category for Year 8 -11 is very limited and heavily oversubscribed for 2022. 

Applications for Year 8 - 11 will only be accepted for students who have achieved: 

  • Straight A's on school reports and high level reporting information.

Applications must include:

A non-refundable and non-transferable Processing Fee of $420.00 applies for all Academic Selective Entry Applications.

All places for Selective Entry in Years 8 –11 are subject to availability.​​

Merit Entry Equity Bursary – Selective Entry (Academic)

Brisbane State High School is a public school that is committed to providing opportunity for students.  For students who are out-of-catchment, this opportunity comes in the form of selected entry places.  Currently, there is a non-refundable Processing Fee of $420.00 associated with these places. 

We recognise that there are families who experience genuine hardship.  In cases of sustained hardship, this fee may prevent consideration of a select entry place.  We wish to consider all students who desire a place at Brisbane State High School under the category of Selective Entry - Academic and do not want this fee to be a barrier for those in genuine hardship. 

As a result, the School Council has endorsed a limited number of Merit Entry Equity Bursaries available for Academic Selective Entry in 2021. 

We invite families for whom this fee presents an insurmountable barrier to application, to submit interest in this bursary by the closing dates listed below:

Enrolment applications be submitted via email or post.

Enrolment application packages must include copies of the relevant supporting documentation along with a completed Prospective Student Enrolment Application Form.

Note: Original documents will be sighted by our Enrolment Office at a later date (to be advised).

Email | Scan and save all enrolment application paperwork in original format together with the required supporting documentation as a PDF file. Reduce the size of the application package to a .zip file format before emailing, if necessary.
