Last weekend, the highest rated chess players from State High competed in the Secondary Interschool State Championships. The team qualified for this event through their performance in the Gardiner Chess lead up tournament in Term 3. The Saturday team comprising Jason Chan (Year 11), Jun Lamuri (Year 7), Filip Simic (Year 7) and Lucas Su (Year 9) won each of their three matches, which resulted in the team placing in the top half of the draw for the Sunday round. On Sunday, Jason and Filip were joined by Imira Dewadasa (Year 7) and Dulin Kodituwakku (Year 8). After a convincing 4 – 0 win in round four, State High took on the two highest rated teams in the event for the final two rounds. In spite of this tough draw, State High achieved fourth place overall, just one point off third place.

All our players represented the school with pride and passion. Special mention must be given to Imira, who won all three of his Sunday games, and Filip, whose only loss was against the eventual overall champion school Anglican Church Grammar School. Thanks to these students and their families for flying the flag for State High Chess at this prestigious event.
