Academic Merit

Entry to Brisbane State High School within the Academic Merit category is very competitive.

Academic Merit entry students are selected on the basis of an order of merit.  Applicants in this category sit the specific selection test which forms the primary selection criterion.

Academic Merit applicants for other year levels are determined by the enrolment capacity of the school, considering available space in each year level, and students are selected on the basis of an order of merit.

This form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar.

Preparing your Enrolment Application

For all applicants, we need to see original documents (certified copies will not be accepted) which prove that the child is entitled to attend a State school without paying full fees (as would be the case for fee-paying overseas students). We therefore need to see:

1. Child's birth certificate (with the official translation if necessary).

The school will require proof of at least one parent's Australian citizenship. If one parent was born in Australia, proof of Australian citizenship is not required. If both parents were born overseas, the child's birth certificate must be accompanied by ONE of the following documents:

  • Australian or New Zealand passport (of student NOT parent); OR
  • Australian Citizenship Certificate (of student OR parent); OR
  • Appropriate Visa

2. School reports for previous three semesters.

Year 8 Academic Merit entry students are selected on the basis of an order of merit. All applicants in this category sit the specific selection test which forms the primary selection criterion. Past test papers are not available. To assist the Enrolment Panel to make a determination that is, in their opinion, in the best educational interests of the applicant, the Principal reserves the right to also consider other information sources. All the documentation listed should therefore be submitted in every case:

  • School reports: Child's original reports for previous three semesters
  • Enrolment Application package completed by applicant's parents

To ensure prompt processing of the application, all relevant original documents should be included with the application form. Applications which are incomplete will not be processed.
