Brisbane State High School has a proud history where the Extra-Curricular (E-C) Program forms an integral component of the State High experience. Tradition is valued in order to acknowledge the past, maintain a consistent identity and encourage economy.
The E-C Program aims to offer a range of activities (Sporting, Cultural and Other) that provide opportunities for students to participate, learn, develop and excel.
Our E-C Program is an integral part of student well-being, promotes a sense of belonging and fosters a sense of pride in both individual and group achievements. Student participation in regular sporting and other recreational activities is linked to improved attention and concentration, raised academic performance, improved self-confidence and reduction in stress.
Extra-curricular activities are rarely scheduled during class time. They are conducted during a variety of hours and days/nights, including weekends. Training/rehearsal times are generally scheduled before or after classes on weekdays but might also occasionally occur on weekends.
Some activities such as Instrumental Music (IM) are closely linked to a curriculum area. Department of Education and Training policy mandates that IM students must participate in both classroom lessons and the ensemble components of the program.
Students seeking inclusion in the E-C Program must have parental approval to do so. Submission of the registration and general consent forms confirms parental/carer consent to participate in the trial/audition process and the activity if successful in securing a place.
While every effort is made to maximise opportunities for participation for all students, certain activities have limited availability, usually due to circumstances beyond the school’s control. Students who miss out on securing a place in a preferred extra-curricular activity are encouraged to consider an alternative one. Trying something new could be a very positive and rewarding experience leading to new opportunities, experiences and friendships.

Parents/guardians are required to print and complete the Annual General Consent Form and return it to the Extra-Curricular office in person or via email. The form is available via the following links to the registration forms where you can register your child online for each activity in which they wish to participate:
The following activities do
not require an online registration or general consent form. However, separate consent and registration forms will be required from parents/carers in order for students to participate.
One of the great features of State High is that we welcome parents and past students to assist with the implementation of extra-curricular activities. Due to the number of activities occurring each week, it is impossible to have them all covered by teachers. Any assistance that parents or past students can offer in coaching or managing, scoring, costuming, ticketing, officiating or working in the canteen is greatly appreciated.
All volunteers require a Working with Children Check - Blue Card, organised through the Extra-curricular support office. Parents of current State High students do not require a Blue Card. Information about Blue Card is available online.
All non-curriculum activities conducted at the school have a user-pays structure. A levy to participate in an activity is payable to cover the cost of that year’s delivery of the activity. The sub-committee (of the P&C) and/or parent helpers, under the direction of the Master in Charge (MiC), are responsible for providing financial assistance through fundraising to purchase items that are more expensive than the day to day operational expenses. These sub-committees meet on a regular basis during the duration of the activity and are overseen by the school’s P&C association. Sub-committee members assist in fostering support of both the activity and the MiC amongst parents/carers. It is important that the sub-committee executive strives to encourage all parents/carers and supporters to be a part of the program.
