Over the Easter long weekend, State High students from three of our Instrumental Music ensembles joined thousands of musicians from across the country to participate in the annual 2019 Yamaha Australian National Band Championships held at Brisbane City Hall.
Saturday 20 April
Our Wind Orchestra played beautifully and won the Junior C Grade section with a clean sweep. They won the hymn, test piece, stage march and own choice prizes all by one point to give them a four-point win in the overall on-stage Championship.
Our Symphonic Band then played in the Main Auditorium in Brisbane City Hall in the Open B Grade section. The band performed superbly and executed their program with precision and great musicianship. The ensemble received fifth place overall and was awarded third place in the Stage March Competition. They were the only school ensemble in the section and were not out of place in a field of adult bands.
Sunday 21 April
The State High Brass Ensemble had a very early start at 7:00am on Easter Sunday. Again, our State High musicians performed the program they prepared with flair and precision to win the Junior C Grade Brass Band section in another clean sweep. Great credit must go to all the players in the band and their conductor, Dr Heather McWilliams.
Thursday 18 April
Several of our young musicians chose to prepare pieces in order to compete in the national solo competitions and all these players did themselves and the school proud.
Joel Woodfield (Year 11) placed third and Fin Gillespie (Year 10) placed fourth for the Junior Cornet Solo while Elisabeth Gillespie (Year 10) placed fifth in the Junior Alto Saxophone Solo.
Yuliana Chen (Year 9) committed to a number of events and won both the Open and Junior Overall Percussion prizes. The full list of her achievements is below:
